How to use reciprocal pronouns 'each other'/'one another'

If someone asks you: Do you know the correct usage of 'each other'/'one another'? Your probable answer will be 'Yes', but how accurately can you use them?

'Each other'/'one another' are called reciprocal pronouns. Some English users form the concept that both are the same in meaning and their usage is exactly alike. Read on and see if you agree.

In English grammar, 'each other' is applied when only 2 parties/buildings/teams/etc are involved.


Read these examples
  • Bob and Jane dislike each other.
  • Team A and Team B will face each other in the next match.
  • The supermarket and the bank are directly opposite each other.
'One another' is applied when 3 or more than 3 parties are involved.

Read these examples
  • All the workers often help one another to accomplish their tasks.
  • The team members should co-operate with one another to see the project through.
