Using rather/ rather than

"rather" can be used as an adverb of degree
Donald is rather good at Physics.
Some precious gems are rather expensive.


"rather" can be used in sentences to show preference
Francis would rather take the morning flight. (It means Francis likes the morning flight better than the afternoon or evening flight.
They would rather drink coffee.


"rather"
can be used with the word "than" as a preposition
You should have consulted a mechanic, rather than trying to repair the car yourself.
They spent most of their money on expensive clothes rather than on food!
