Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns are words like I, you, we, he, she, they, it. They are used to replace proper and common nouns, and are used as the subjects of sentences.

Example sentences

"I go to the market every morning," said Mrs Lee.

"You must obey the school rules," the teacher told the students.
("You" is the personal pronoun used as a plural subject)

"You should be alert while crossing the busy streets," Mrs Harley reminded her daughter.
("You" is the personal pronoun used as a singular subject)

My brother and I will be having a vacation in Japan next month.
We will be staying at a well-known hotel in Tokyo.
("We" is the personal pronoun used to replace "my brother and I")

Tommy is the tallest boy in class.
He is also the most intelligent.
("He" is the personal pronoun and is used to replace the proper noun "Tommy")

Sharon likes listening to rock music.
She likes dancing and singing too.
("She" is the personal pronoun used to replace the proper noun "Sharon")

The children are always very noisy.
They shout and laugh loudly while they are playing.
("They" is the personal pronoun used to replace "The children")

Note that the personal pronoun "they" is also used for animals and things.
The kittens have not been fed yet.
They are mewing for food.
("They" is the personal pronoun used to replace "The kittens"/animals)

The new chairs and tables will be delivered to our office this afternoon.
They are very nice but rather expensive.
("They" is the personal pronoun used to replace "The chairs and tables"/things)

The personal pronoun "it" is generally used for animals and things.
My pet dog likes to chew slippers and socks!
It has very sharp canines!
("It" is the personal pronoun used to replace "My pet dog")

"It" can be used as the subject of the sentence and it actually refers to a person.
"It is a baby boy," the obstetrician told Mrs Hardy who had just given birth to her first child.
("It" refers to the baby boy)

"It is your boss on the phone, and he wants to speak to you urgently," Laura told her brother, Peter.
("It" refers to Peter's boss)

"It" can be used as the subject of the sentence and it actually refers to a weather condition.
It hasn't rained for almost two months.
("It" refers to the weather)


Another type of personal pronouns such as me, you, us, him, her, them, it are used as objects of verbs and prepositions.

Example sentences
Please send (verb) me a postcard when you reach Costa Rica.
"me" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the verb "send")

My children buy lots of carnations for ( preposition) me on Mother's Day.
("me" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the preposition "for")

Did anyone inform (verb) you about the meeting?
("you" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the verb "inform")

The pizza will be delivered to you in 20 minutes.
("you"is the personal pronoun used as the object of the preposition "to")

Can you contact (verb) us next week?
("us" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the verb "contact")

The sausages are for us.
("us" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the preposition "for")

Henry is rather forgetful.
Please remind (verb) him to bring along his mackintosh.
("him" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the verb "remind")

Lionel needs to do his revision.
Remember to bring the reference books to him tomorrow.
("him" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the preposition "to")

Sharon doesn't know where Henry is going to next week.
Tell (verb) her that Henry is going to London.
"her" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the verb "tell")

Olivia loves roses.
All the sweet-smelling roses are for her.
("her" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the preposition "for")

The children are very noisy.
Tell (verb) them to keep quiet.
"them" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the verb "tell")

The puppies are very hungry.
Buy some puppy food for them.
("them" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the preposition "for")

The house is too old. You need to renovate it.
("it" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the verb "renovate")

Your pet cat is too skinny.
Buy some nutritious cat food for it.
("it" is the personal pronoun used as the object of the preposition "for")
