Adjectives are descriptive words that tell us something about people, animals, things, places, buildings, situations, etc. There are several kinds of adjectives.
Original adjectives
These adjectives appear in their root word form and are not formed from other words. A few examples of original adjectives are pretty, ugly, bad, good, fierce, afraid, timid, brave, gorgeous, kind, etc.
Adjectives formed from verbs
Many adjectives are formed from verbs. A few common adjectives formed from verbs are excited, exciting/interested, interesting/bored, boring/ surprised, surprising/frightened, frightening.
Example sentences:
Henry got very excited when he heard the good news.
Teresa told her friends that she liked all "Nancy Drew" stories because they were all very exciting.
Peter is very interested in astrology. He thinks astrology is a very interesting subject.
Most students often feel bored during the History lesson. They think that History is a very boring subject.
Florence was really surprised to see a gigantic 3-tier cake on the coffee table when she entered the kitchen. However, to her brother, Francis, seeing the cake was not surprising at all.
Linda was very frightened when she saw a tall dark shadow outside her bedroom window. She screamed as the frightening shadow advanced towards her.
Hyphenated compound adjectives
Hyphenated compound adjectives consist of at least two different words that are separated by a hyphen (-).
kind-hearted
Mrs Lee is always very kind. Therefore, you can say Mrs Lee is a kind-hearted person.
bad-tempered
Old Mr Harley often scolds people. He is a rather bad-tempered old man.
ill-mannered
Our neighbor's children are really ill-mannered. They keep throwing stones at our pet dog, and they often say filthy words!
warm-blooded/cold-blooded
Mammals are warm-blooded whereas reptiles are cold-blooded.
The police are investigating the case of the cold-blooded murder of the hotel maid who was found slain in one of the washrooms.
good-natured
Our new boss is a very good-natured man. He seldom reprimands the workers.
passport-sized
You are required to submit your application form together with two passport-sized photos.
time-consuming ( it means taking up a lot of time)
Some people think that meetings are very time-consuming.
bad-smelling
She threw away the bad-smelling vegetables.
sweet-smelling
Roses and lavenders are sweet-smelling flowers.
tight-fitting
Teresa complained that all her clothes are too tight-fitting and she could not even breathe when wearing them!
funny-looking
Bozo, the clown, is a very funny-looking clown. No wonder the children love to see his funny tricks.
non-alcoholic (it means containing no alcohol)
The doctor advised him to go for only non-alcoholic drinks.
non-smoking
Always make sure it is a non-smoking restaurant or cafeteria before you decide to have your meal there.
